Rush Delta Phi

Greek Rush Week begins Thursday, January 24th. Check our Events page for a list of our Rush Events. All male students not currently in a social fraternity are encouraged to come!

For more information, you are invited to contact our Rush Chair, Henry Liu, by e-mail at hrl2@pitt.edu. If you want more info on going Greek, visit Pitt's Intrafraternity Council.

Joining a Fraternity: Explained

Many freshman come to college with no knowledge of the Greek system other than stereotypes they see on TV. The steps are fairly simple, but use some words that not all students are familiar with.

Rush

Rush Week is held officially towards the beginning of every semester. During this time, fraternities may hold Rush Events. Prospective Pledges (referred to as "Rushes") may attend Rush Events at any fraternity. This helps the Rush decide which fraternity he will accept a bid from. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited at fraternities during Rush Week, regardless of age.

Bids

Bids are given by fraternities to Rushes that are a good fit. Some students rush multiple fraternities and must select one bid to accept. Once a bid is accepted, the Rush becomes a Pledge.

Pledging

Pledging is the way Pledges become brothers in most fraternities. No two fraternities have the same pledging process. Pledging is secretive and can be very controversial at some schools, but the University of Pittsburgh has a No Hazing policy that all Greek organizations must agree to obey.

Pledging allows a brotherhood and a pledge class to get to know one another. It helps brothers and pledges ensure that they are a good fit for one another.

Some fraternities do not have a pledging process at all. You just sign a piece of paper and become a brother. Our chapter does not believe that signing a piece of paper properly prepares pledges for brotherhood and we are more than a club for which anyone can sign up. The benefits of this can be seen in our strong friendships and lifelong brotherhood that begin during pledging.
